Many of you have probably heard about profound the benefits of meditation. But sometimes, people are just too busy they don’t even have time to relax and meditate. They rush through the day trying to multi-task, not even realizing that they need to take a break. This prevents us from becoming aware of our body, let alone our breathing, which are 2 of the most important aspects of meditation.
If you are one of these people, you are not alone. This week, we’d like to change that by introducing you to a simple activity that can provide you with the same results as meditation – art. A simple art activity such as drawing, painting or coloring can provide you an opportunity to relax and open your senses to the sensual world. It is another way to access the meditative state of mind and the numerous benefits it bring.
Art as meditation therapy
Meditation is a practice, wherein the person trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness. The goal of meditation is to quiet the mind and eventually reach a higher level of awareness and inner calm.
Of all the meditation techniques, it is said that art is the most powerful. Many of you will agree that art provides an escape to the sometimes harsh reality. One can find peace in expressing themselves and find temporary refuge in painting. Once we start painting, we become relaxed and a quiet inner peace can be created.
Art therapy helps us slow down and teaches us to be present in the moment. It makes us attentive and aware. It fosters the interaction of the body and mind; thus, creating a space that allows the unconscious to be felt, heard and seen. It trains us to be more in control of the moment and to face struggles and challenges more easily.
For this to be effective, you need to get rid of all distractions. Close the door, turn off your mobile phone and the television. Forget about all your worries before you start painting. Now, pick up the brush and keep it moving. Allow your thoughts and your feelings to paint a beautiful picture. Sometimes, the key to your best art is to let go.
